Ellie Misner’s East London-based eponymous couture label was recently seen on Maisie Williams on the red carpet for Practical Magic 2 but has been an it-girl favourite for those in the know since it started in 2022. The zero-waste corsetier has dressed Shygirl, Paloma Elsesser, Dove Cameron and SZA and takes inspiration from women’s bodies and memories. Her last collection, “It’s My Birthday, I Can Cry If I Want To,” explores the complex emotions of turning 30. What else is on her moodboard?
What part of history or culture gets your juices flowing when you’re trying to think of your new creations?
Every collection has been based around myself, or a person in my life that I want to bottle the feeling of. Both my grandmas have passed away, but both of their houses had over-the-top art. Art Deco fixtures, sketches all over the walls. There were all these Japanese silk prints from Hong Kong, Venetian masks on the walls. My other grandma had amazing lamps, kind of like chachkis, or really ornate vintage perfume bottles. As a little kid, I was obsessed with it. A lot of my collections are quite inspired by those pieces because they’re in my studio now. I’m such a hoarder. Then I feel like these items mix with my love of shape and accentuating the curve of your body. My favourite is a recent striped dress with a big bow on the side; it’s very me.
Why are you not showing this fashion week?
London’s broke. London’s also stingy as f*ck. No one wants to part with their money. We also don’t have as much disposable income as the US as a fashion city. Unless I’m doing a lot of custom pieces for red carpet – I’ll get a call two days before a Tems event for a heart attack custom. I also love working with Raye and with Jorja Smith.
