PRIYA AHLUWALIA'S MOODBOARD

It’s definitely a shift for us. There’s gonna be some staples from Ahluwahlia, but we’ve been experimenting with new silhouettes, and some of it’s more pared back than you’re used to seeing from me. I was thinking about how humans resist things politically through joy and community. On the mood board, there’s quite a lot of Kerry James Marshall artwork; there’s quite a lot of imagery of the Black Panthers. I kept finding Indian sculpture, and when I read the sculptors’ descriptions, it was all about emotional rebellion. There’s also rave culture because I’ve always found that people coming together and raving feels like a sign of resistance. I’m quite a research-heavy designer, but it’s never so referential that it becomes costumey. I like to subvert all the research. So even though that’s what’s on the board, it might not necessarily be immediately obvious when you see the collection.

Absolutely. I mean, God, I can’t think of much else. And to be honest with you, I’m not saying I’m changing the world with this collection, but I think even on a personal level, to look at these subjects and to explore them partly helps me process it, as well as doing all the other things I need to do to actually make change.
